The Journey Behind Jumpstart Indonesia’s Beverage Capsule Machine: From Concept to Market

At WOWME Design, we thrive on turning ambitious ideas into tangible, market-ready products. One such exciting journey was our collaboration with Jumpstart Indonesia on their beverage capsule machine, a project that took us from a rough idea to a sleek, functional product ready for homes and businesses. This wasn’t just about designing a machine; it was about capturing the essence of the client’s vision and bringing it to life in a way that resonates with users.

The Initial Vision: Crafting Warm, Physical Interaction

When Jumpstart Indonesia first approached us, they shared an intriguing concept: they wanted a beverage capsule machine that offered more than just a seamless, digital experience. Their idea centred on creating a tactile, warm interaction—a way to physically connect users to the machine. To achieve this, they envisioned a design incorporating a wooden side handle that users could touch, hold, and interact with directly. This element was meant to evoke a sense of warmth and craftsmanship, standing out in a market saturated with purely digital, automated solutions.

It was a beautiful concept—one that aimed to bridge the gap between technology and human interaction. Our team was immediately drawn to the challenge and set out to refine this vision while ensuring it could be realised within the constraints of manufacturability and market requirements.

From Ground Zero to Working Prototype

The journey began with intensive brainstorming sessions, sketching initial ideas, and conducting user research to understand the kind of experience people would want from a machine like this. A key challenge was to develop a mechanical solution that could seamlessly integrate physical interaction with the digital operation of the machine. This element shaped our decisions on form, materiality, and user interaction.

Our next step was to develop a working prototype. This involved meticulous attention to detail—engineering internal components to translate manual input into digital functionality while ensuring the machine retained a cohesive and user-friendly design. We created several iterations of the prototype, testing each one for usability, ergonomics, and overall performance. Feedback loops with the client were constant and collaborative, ensuring the design stayed true to their vision while meeting technical and functional requirements.

The Challenge of Compromise: Balancing Vision and Market Needs

As with any ambitious project, the journey was not without its challenges. While the original idea of a wooden side handle was compelling, it presented hurdles in terms of manufacturing complexity, cost, and scalability. The handle added not only to the production budget but also to the machine’s size and assembly requirements. In parallel, market research revealed that while users appreciated the warmth of the design, they also prioritised compactness and affordability in their purchasing decisions.

This led to a critical point in the project where compromises had to be made. Together with the client, we explored alternative solutions that retained the spirit of the original idea while addressing practical concerns. The wooden handle was ultimately replaced with a sleeker, more compact design that incorporated warm-toned metal finishes to evoke a similar emotional connection. This shift allowed us to streamline the manufacturing process and reduce costs, ensuring the product could compete in the market without losing its essence.

Bringing the Vision to Life

The final design stayed true to the heart of the original concept—a machine that feels approachable, warm, and user-centric. The refined materials and finishes provide a balance of sophistication and practicality, making it a standout product in its category. Seeing the product launched and embraced by consumers is a proud moment for both our team and the client.

This journey underscores a fundamental truth about design: it’s never perfect. As designers, we are always striving for the best possible outcome, iterating and refining with every step. However, there comes a time when you have to let go, accept the balance between ambition and feasibility, and release the product into the world. That’s where the real journey begins—when a product interacts with its users and starts making an impact.

A Milestone Achieved

We’re thrilled to see Jumpstart Indonesia’s beverage capsule machine make its mark in the market. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration, perseverance, and the willingness to adapt. We congratulate the client on this significant milestone and are excited to see how this product evolves in the hands of its users.
